Firefox, the breathtaking web browser from Mozilla Foundation achieved 1 billionth download today. The historic download happened sometime around 15:00 hours GMT, July 31, 2009. Firefox is a free and open source software available for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Firefox commands 31% share of web browsers and is second most popular web browser, next to Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
The current version of Firefox is 3.5.1, released in July 2009. The first version came in November 2004. Firefox came as a highly efficient and fast browser with an intuitive, easy to use and aesthetically pleasing user interface. It provided tabbed browsing environment, bookmarks, ability to save and restore sessions, and many other capabilities. When Firefox 3 was released, it recorded more than 8 million downloads on the first day itself, which is a Guinness World Record.
